August 27th, 2008: New Music! Here are some noteworthy late summer/early fall developments for the 'dogs:
Provention: Minnesota Musicians Line Up in Response to the Coming Republican National Convention FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Provention, a concert organized by artists and musicians from the Twin Cities to provide a counterpoint to The Republican National Convention, has finally secured a date and a venue: Tuesday, September 2 at The Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. "Our elephantine guests do not represent our views about health care, the environment, justice, peace, and sustainability," says event organizer and Honeydogs singer-songwriter Adam Levy. "It feels so obvious that our government has gone off the rails to an amazing degree. In every area from war and torture to the environment, we share a sense that now is the time to turn the corner" says concert organizer Matt Wilson, formerly of the band Trip Shakespeare. "The idea of allowing a straight up celebration of the current regime in our metropolis is unthinkable. This is our way of standing up in objection to the status quo." "We want to give people a place to come and feel comfortable among friends," adds Semisonic bassist John Munson, a concert organizer and founder of the jazz combo, The New Standards. "Beyond that we feel that artists and musicians have a valuable contribution to make to political dialogue. We're basically creating a free-speech zone where bands can sound off." "The road to the perfect venue has been circuitous but we finally have a great location, a solid lineup and a symbolic proximity to the Xcel Center," says creative professional and organizer Selina Larsen. "There are hopes that we can have another event closer to the election with more of the great bands who originally wanted on board." Artists performing include: Nellie McKay Warning: this roster is subject to the addition of super-secret guests! The record marks the first "exclusively digital" release from the band and is available for download at iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Napster and Rhapsody. Included in the pan-genre assembly of music largely composed for film over the last 11 years is the Bill Evans-inspired gem worthy of jazz standard status, "The Kiss" which was featured in the HBO series Sex in the City. Instrumentals served as a way for the band to explore different styles from bluegrass (Third Ear Stomp) to bossa nova (Pornogamy), to conjunto (Who Stole Tiki Rose), to Nino Rota Fellini-esque cabaret (Le Sha Ni Ja Ni/Potalotogotonya). The collection will allow fans to see the band's evolution through songs recorded 1997-2000. As a whole, the "record" feels like a soundtrack to an unreleased Wes Anderson film or a backdrop to a post-apocalyptic novel set in the western American desert. The band is currently recording new material for their ninth release, and hoping for a late fall/early winter release. They are also in negotiations for releasing their first two records as digital downloads. Upcoming shows: April 15th, 2007: Headin' For Home Apologies for not keeping up with the daily updates but it was a pretty busy past eight days and we just didn't manage to get the pen to paper. So, here's a stream of conciousness recap:
Back on the road we folded time and arrived at Otto's only 20 minutes late for load in. It was the last night of the tour and we were very happy to share the bill, and barroom smoke, with The Melismatics, who put on a great show as always. We plan to play a benefit for Peter A's new iron lung sometime this summer...please stay tuned... Easter greetings from I-80 Eastbound It's been a lot of fun out here so far with Chicago and Cleveland under our belt and left in the wake of our rock-n-roll late winter storm front. The Beat Kitchen was a great new venue for us and we thank Mallman and local favorites Canasta for sharing the night with us – let's do it again sometime. Thanks to all who came out – we hope to get back there as soon as possible. We'd also like to thank Gary for such a great job on sound as well as the after bar joke of the tour thus far:
That's a keeper. The drive to Cleveland re-introduced us to the wonders of lake-effect snow. It tried to staunch the flow of our volcanic rock but to no avail. We were able to deliver our sound to the few and privileged that braved the elements to imbibe the two-band bill. Thanks to Big Leg Emma for letting us share gear on Wilbert's cozy and intimate stage. Our thanks go as well to Mike, Jim, and the staff at the club for the good sound, hot meal and northern hospitality. Best wishes to Jamie on her move to San Diego – we hope to make it out your way this year. Today is the long haul to NYC and unfortunately the snowstorm seems to be following us eastward. If anybody up ahead has new wiper blades for a 1994 Ford Club Wagon, please bring them to Piano's and we''ll give you a free t-shirt, CD, and a plus one on the guest list. We're looking forward to catching up with friends and fans tonight as we have not played full-band there since September 2001. Happy Easter to all – be safe and we'll be in touch later on down the road... - the Honeydogs Saturday March 17th 2007 Thursday night in Dallas was great - lots of old friends to catch up with including our brother in arms, Salim, who got us the gig. The hamburger ranks in the top five of all time and the patrons were a joy to play for. A special thanks goes out to the dude in the parking lot of the Barley House who insisted on blasting us 37 steps closer to tinnitus with his mobile PA system during our load in. We had a brief but eventful visit to Austin for the SXSW Music & Film Conference. Thanks go out to Joanna James for joining us on violin and vocals as well as Michael Lewis on saxophone rounding out the 9-piece ensemble. Apologies for the abbreviated set go to those who came out for the showcase to see us play only 6 tunes. That's what happens when you're on the end of a 7 act night - you get crunched. The evening was topped off by having our only set of van keys misplaced by the valet parking attendant after he pulled it up, locked it, and went home for the night. About 4:00 AM we wrangled up a guy with a slim-jim to pop the lock so we could load the gear up and attempt a hot-wire salvo but to no avail. Matt & Brian slept in the van to keep a watchful eye until daylight. By 11:00AM they were still unable to locate the valet attendant so Matt decided to try a 70's Ford Van keyjust for laughs and what can I say...we're on the road back home. Many thanks to the Melismatics for keeping us company while we waited for the unlocking of the van. A big thanks also to the staff at the lovely Club One 15 for not kicking us and our gear out to the curb until our van was open. That's all for now, we'll check in with y'all later... Thursday, March 15th, 2007 We're 'loaded like a freight train, flyin' like an aeroplane'down Interstate 35. We stopped in K.C. last night to play @ the Hurricane – it's been some time since we were there last and it was nice to share the stage with The Melismatics. They sounded great and will make a good showing @ SXSW. We are joined by Stephen Kung on trumpet and Matt Darling on trombone for this stretch of shoes and happy they wanted to tag along for the long haul. Should be in warmer weather tonight in Dallas. We've haven't been there in awhile either and look forward to reconnecting with friends and fans. More tomorrow... Adam, Trent, Brian, Peter S. & Peter A. January 31, 2007 Welcome to the Honeydogs' new eHome with a fresh coat of Amygdala paint. Many thanks to those that made the move possible (you know who you are...) The new record, Amygdala, is out on the CC Entertainment label and should be available at retailers nationwide and online at Amazon.com or Best Buy.com. The record features the new lineup: Adam, Trent, Brian, Peter J. Sands, and Peter Anderson. Noah and Jeff played on a few tracks as well as many other surprise guests. Look for the band to be on the road this spring and summer. We'll do our best to get out to as many places as possible in 2007 – we promise.
